Medicare Supplement Insurance

Medicare Supplement insurance, also called Medigap, works with Original Medicare. It may help reduce your share of certain Part A and Part B deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

Works with Original Medicare

Original Medicare remains your primary coverage. The supplement pays according to the standardized benefits of the policy you select.

Standardized plan letters

Plans with the same letter generally provide the same standardized medical benefits, although premiums and company service can differ.

Provider flexibility

You can generally use any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare, without relying on a Medicare Advantage provider network.

Drug coverage is separate

Newer Medigap policies do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage, so a separate Part D plan may be needed.

Common plan considerations

  • Monthly premium and household or payment discounts, when offered.
  • Plan letter and the specific standardized benefits it covers.
  • Company rate history, financial strength, customer service, and underwriting rules.
  • Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period and any guaranteed-issue rights.
  • High-deductible Plan G availability; the 2026 high deductible is $2,950
Plan availability note: Plan F is generally not available to people who became newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Eligibility and state rules should be reviewed before selecting a policy.
